Tea Tree Oil: Practitioner Update

Tea tree oil is under regulatory discussion, particularly in relation to cosmetic and retail products in the EU. The current position is reassuring: this does not amount to a general ban on qualified aromatherapists using appropriately diluted tea tree oil within professional hands-on treatments.

The issues become more complex when tea tree oil is supplied as a take-home or retail product, especially for the EU or Northern Ireland market. Product claims, labelling, intended use and presentation can all affect the rules that apply. Practitioners should also continue to use appropriate consultation, dilution, skin-sensitivity precautions and good storage, as tea tree oil can oxidise over time.
